What started as a fun afternoon making cake balls with a dear friend has grown into Simply Cake Balls — a handcrafted, celebration-ready business built by April Rector one custom order at a time. In this Business Spotlight interview, April shares the path that brought her here, the lessons learned along the way, and what makes every cake ball personal.
For those who don't know you yet, tell us a little about yourself and the path that brought you here
For those who don't know me yet, I'm April, the owner and creator behind Simply Cake Balls! What started as a fun hobby quickly turned into something I never imagined it would become, and I'm so excited to share that journey with you.
A little bit about me personally—I wear many hats. I'm a wife, a mom, and a full-time employee, and on top of that, I'm a baker. Like most people, my days are full and busy, but baking has always been something I truly enjoy. When I started Simply Cake Balls, it was out of pure love for creating something sweet and personal for others. I honestly never thought it would grow into a business, but I'm so grateful it did.
Since then, it's been a journey of learning, experimenting, and connecting with people who share the same love for celebrating life's sweetest moments. Every order, every event, and every customer has taught me something new. Simply Cake Balls has grown from a simple idea into something I'm incredibly proud of—and it's become such a meaningful part of my life. I can't wait to see where the next chapter takes us!
When I'm not baking, I'm spending time with my family, staying busy with work, or dreaming up new cake ball flavors and designs. I truly believe that the best things in life are sweet—both literally and figuratively—and I'm so happy to share that with the people around me.
When did the idea for your business first take shape, and what inspired you to pursue it?
The idea for Simply Cake Balls really began with a dear friend. One day, we were making cake balls for fun, and she showed me how to make them the way her mother used to make them. It was such a simple, sweet moment, but it stuck with me.
We started making them together, and before I knew it, I was hooked. It was fun, creative, and brought people together. Soon, I began making them for family and friends, and the response was always the same: 'These are amazing! You should sell them!'
I never really planned for it to become a business. I just loved making something that made people happy. But the more I made, the more I realized how much joy it brought not only to others but to me as well. What started as a simple afternoon of baking with a friend slowly turned into a passion—and eventually, into Simply Cake Balls.
Looking back, it's amazing how something so small turned into something so meaningful. I'm so thankful for that moment with my friend, because without it, Simply Cake Balls might never have existed.
What do you remember most about getting the business off the ground?

What I remember most is all the practice! There was definitely a lot of trial and error along the way. In the beginning, I was figuring out everything as I went—testing recipes, perfecting techniques, and learning what worked and what didn't.
I spent a lot of time experimenting with flavors, textures, and designs to find what made Simply Cake Balls truly special. Some batches turned out perfectly, while others... well, let's just say they were 'learning experiences.' But each attempt taught me something new, and I slowly started to see real progress.
What stands out most is how much I learned through simply doing. I didn't have a formal plan or roadmap—I just kept baking, kept trying, and kept improving. The support and encouragement from friends and family along the way meant everything, too. Their honest feedback (and willingness to taste-test!) helped shape Simply Cake Balls into what it is today.
Looking back, those early days were equal parts exciting and challenging, but they're also some of my favorite memories. It's incredible to see how far things have come from those first batches made in my kitchen.
Building a business comes with its share of surprises. What have been some of the harder moments you've faced?
One of the harder parts has been learning to balance everything that comes with running a small business. When you wear so many hats—wife, mom, full-time employee, and baker—finding time to do it all well can be really challenging.
There have definitely been moments when I've felt stretched thin. Filling large orders while juggling work deadlines, family responsibilities, and everyday life isn't always easy. There are late nights, early mornings, and times when I wonder how I'm going to get it all done.
Another challenge has been learning the business side of things. Baking is the fun part, but there's so much more behind the scenes—pricing, marketing, managing orders, keeping up with messages, and making sure every customer has a great experience. It can feel overwhelming at times, especially when you're doing it all on your own.
But through it all, I've learned to take things one step at a time and give myself grace. The support from my family, friends, and customers has made such a difference. And every time I see someone enjoy what I've created, it reminds me why I started in the first place. The hard moments are worth it when you love what you do.

Looking back, what has running your business taught you that you didn't expect to learn?
Running my business has taught me so much more than I ever expected. I've learned that confidence doesn't come from being perfect—it comes from showing up, trying, learning from mistakes, and continuing to grow.
I've also learned the importance of patience. Building a business doesn't happen overnight. There were times when I wanted everything to fall into place quickly, but I've come to realize that slow, steady progress is just as meaningful. Every small step forward counts.
Another big lesson has been learning to ask for help and accept support. I used to feel like I had to do everything myself, but I've learned that it's okay to lean on the people around you. Whether it's my family helping with an event, a friend sharing my business on social media, or a customer offering encouragement, that support has been invaluable.
Most importantly, running Simply Cake Balls has taught me to believe in myself. Starting something from nothing and watching it grow has shown me that I'm capable of more than I ever imagined. It's taught me resilience, creativity, and the power of following your passion—even when the path isn't always easy.

I hope customers notice the care and personal touch that goes into every order. I'm not just making cake balls—I'm creating something special for their celebration. Every detail matters to me, from the flavor and texture to the design and presentation.
What I think sets Simply Cake Balls apart is the heart behind it. This isn't a big bakery churning out hundreds of identical treats. It's a small, personal business where every order gets my full attention. I take pride in making sure each cake ball looks beautiful and tastes amazing, and I genuinely care about making my customers happy.
I also love the customization aspect. Whether someone wants a specific color scheme, a fun theme, or a unique flavor combination, I enjoy bringing their ideas to life. It's so rewarding to see a customer's face light up when they see their vision turned into something delicious.
Most of all, I hope people feel the love and passion behind Simply Cake Balls. I pour my heart into every order, and I want that to shine through in everything I create.
Is there a product, service, or part of your business that you wish more people knew about?

I wish more people knew just how customizable Simply Cake Balls can be! Cake balls aren't just a one-size-fits-all treat—they can be designed to match any theme, color scheme, or occasion.
Whether it's a wedding with elegant gold and white designs, a baby shower with adorable pastel colors, a birthday party with fun character themes, or a corporate event with branded colors and logos, the possibilities are truly endless. I love working with customers to create something that's uniquely theirs.
I also wish more people knew about the variety of flavors available. Beyond the classic chocolate and vanilla, there are so many delicious options to explore—red velvet, lemon, strawberry, funfetti, cookies and cream, and so many more. There's truly something for everyone.
And for those who haven't tried cake balls before, I wish they knew just how perfect they are for any occasion. They're bite-sized, easy to serve, and always a crowd-pleaser. Whether you're hosting a big event or just want a sweet treat for yourself, cake balls are the perfect choice!
What can someone expect when they become a customer for the first time?
When someone becomes a customer for the first time, I want them to feel welcomed, listened to, and excited about their order. From the very first message, my goal is to make the process easy, enjoyable, and stress-free.
I'll take the time to understand what they're looking for—whether it's a specific flavor, design, theme, or occasion. I love hearing about their event and helping them choose the perfect cake balls to match. No question is too small, and I'm always happy to offer suggestions or ideas.
Communication is really important to me. I'll keep them updated throughout the process, from confirming their order details to letting them know when their cake balls are ready. I want them to feel confident that their order is in good hands.
And of course, when they receive their cake balls, I hope they're delighted by both how they look and how they taste. I put so much care into every order, and I want that first experience to be so wonderful that they can't wait to order again!
What keeps you excited about the work you do?
What keeps me excited is that no two orders are ever exactly the same. I love coming up with new flavor combinations, trying out creative designs, and finding ways to make each order unique and special.
There's something so rewarding about taking a customer's idea and turning it into something real. Whether it's matching a wedding theme, creating fun designs for a kid's birthday, or experimenting with a brand-new flavor, every order is a new creative challenge—and I love that.
I'm also excited by the connections I make along the way. Getting to be part of people's celebrations, hearing their stories, and seeing the joy my cake balls bring to their events is incredibly fulfilling. It's amazing to think that something I created in my kitchen is now part of someone's special memories.
And honestly, I'm excited about the future. Simply Cake Balls is still growing, and I can't wait to see where it goes next. Every new customer, every new event, and every new idea keeps me inspired and motivated to keep creating.
What are some of the values or principles that guide the way you run your business?

The biggest values that guide Simply Cake Balls are quality, honesty, creativity, and treating people the way I'd want to be treated.
Quality comes first in everything I do. I use good ingredients, take my time with each order, and never cut corners. If I wouldn't be proud to serve it to my own family, I won't serve it to my customers.
Honesty is also really important to me. I'm upfront about what I can do, realistic about timelines, and transparent about pricing. I want my customers to trust me, and that trust is built through open and honest communication.
Creativity is at the heart of Simply Cake Balls. I love experimenting with new flavors, designs, and ideas. Baking should be fun, and I want that sense of joy and creativity to come through in every order.
And above all, I believe in treating people with kindness and respect. Whether it's a customer, a fellow vendor, or someone I meet at a market, I want every interaction to be positive. Building genuine relationships is what makes this business so special to me.
What does being a local business owner mean to you, and what do you appreciate most about the community you're part of?
Being a local business owner means so much more to me than simply selling cake balls. It means being part of a community, meeting people, building relationships, and having the opportunity to contribute something of my own.
What I appreciate most is the support I've received from the people around me. From friends and family who encouraged me to start, to customers who continue to order and recommend me, to the people I meet at local markets—it's amazing to see how willing people are to support a small business and cheer you on.
I'm incredibly grateful for every person who has stopped by my booth, placed an order, shared a post, told a friend, or simply encouraged me along the way. That community support is a huge part of what makes Simply Cake Balls so special to me.
Is there a customer story that has stayed with you?

There have actually been so many moments with customers that have stayed with me, but one thing that stands out is when someone trusts me to be part of an important celebration in their life.
Whether it's a wedding, milestone birthday, anniversary, or another special occasion, I never take that responsibility for granted. It means so much when a customer comes to me with an idea, trusts me to bring it to life, and then comes back to tell me how much everyone loved them.
Those moments remind me that I'm not just making dessert. I'm getting to be a small part of people's memories and celebrations—and that's something I'm incredibly grateful for.
What do you hope people remember about your business after they've experienced it?
I hope people remember Simply Cake Balls as a business that truly cares about its customers and takes pride in what it creates. I want them to remember the excitement of seeing their custom idea come to life, the care that went into their order, and—of course—how delicious the cake balls were!
Most of all, I hope they remember the personal connection. I want people to feel like they weren't just placing an order with a business; they were working with someone who genuinely wanted to make their celebration a little sweeter.
If they finish their cake balls and think, 'We have to order these again,' then I know I've done my job!
